Tyre care and the law
The minimum tread depth for car tyres, van tyres and 4x4 tyres is 1.6mm measured across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference. We recommend replacing tyres at 3mm as a tyre at 1.6mm takes, on average, an extra car length to stop at 50mph compared to a tyre at 3mm. Tyres should be free from cuts to the cords and bulges, as this can lead to a tyre going out of shape or even exploding!
Tyre pressure is extremely important to the handling of a vehicle, fuel economy and even the life of a tyre. Tyre pressures should be checked regularly at the manufacturer’s specification, which can be found in the hand book, fuel filler flap or inside the door frame of the vehicle. New vehicles are fitted with a TPMS (Tyre Pressure monitoring system) but do not substitute you carrying out regular checks.
